Consumer Price Index

New!A new virtual labor market data system for retrieving data is now available. It looks much different than what you were used to, but has even greater functionality--such as the ability to view or export graphs and maps of the data you select. Follow the tips below to find the data you have used this website to find in the past. If you need assistance with this new system, please contact us; we will be happy to help.

Retrieve CPI Data

Follow the steps below to retrieve data for the area(s) and data set of interest.

Alternately, you may follow our instructions to access CPI data from the opening screen of the LMI virtual LMI data system.

Please note, at any point while using the virtual labor market data system, to clear all prior selections, click on the "Labor Market Analysis" link in the upper left-hand corner of the screen.

United States

Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) - The system should default to this option. If not, under Search Options, click on the Area currently displayed to change it, and from the Area Type drop-down list, choose US. Additionally, if needed, click on Time Period and, from the drop-down list, choose Annual or Monthly as you wish. To change other settings if you wish, click on the + sign to the left of "Show Display Options." From the Diplay Options window, you may choose how to display the data (table, graph, map or narrative), the Time Series Range (1 year, 2 years, 5 years, etc.) and the CPI Data Type (the index itself, the percent change from the previous year, or the percent change from the previous month).

Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners & Clerical Workers (CPI-W) - Click on the + sign to the left of "Show Display Options." At the bottom of the Display Options window, from the drop-down list for CPI Type, choose CPI-W all items. Additionally from the Diplay Options window, you may choose how to display the data (table, graph, map or narrative), the Time Series Range (1 year, 2 years, 5 years, etc.) and the CPI Data Type (the index itself, the percent change from the previous year, or the percent change from the previous month).

Midwest Urban Region (including South Dakota)

Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) - Click on the Area currently displayed to change it, and from the Area Type drop-down list, choose CPI Region. Additionally, if needed, click on Time Period and, from the Period Type drop-down list, choose Annual or Monthly as you wish. To change other settings if you wish, click on the + sign to the left of "Show Display Options." From the Diplay Options window, you may choose how to display the data (table, graph, map or narrative), the Time Series Range (1 year, 2 years, 5 years, etc.) and the CPI Data Type (the index itself, the percent change from the previous year, or the percent change from the previous month).
